Connecting Communities in Cleveland With the Opportunity Corridor
The Opportunity Corridor Project 2 is the second of three major projects to be constructed on Cleveland’s southeast side, with planning efforts that span the last decade. GPD provided engineering consultation with a focus on public information, communication, diversity, inclusion, outreach and coordination with all stakeholders.
An existing, active, triple box combination sewer that ran longitudinally underneath the proposed bridge posed a unique challenge that GPD overcame with nontraditional methods to design substructures and foundations. Three-dimensional finite element methods allowed GPD to design efficient, tall substructures that not only support the bridge superstructure, but span the utilities passing through them. Additionally, GPD’s design of collection systems included the separation of combined sewers in the sewershed to not only support future separation initiatives, but to also provide means for water quality controls for private properties outside of the public right-of-way. These comprehensive improvements will better connect Cleveland communities and provide enhanced opportunity for future commercial development throughout the corridor.
