A New Home for Akron’s Water Department
When a state highway project required the demolition of the City of Akron’s existing water distribution office, GPD was selected to study and design a new home for the city’s water distribution operations and new office building for the Water Department.
After a new site was selected, GPD conducted an extensive study with the Water Department Administration to develop a program of requirements for the new department office facility. The study determined that the new facility required a 30,000-square-foot garage, 10,000 square feet of internal storeroom and workshop, and 20,000 square feet of office space. A 3,000-gallon functioning water tower was also included, which not only acts as an iconic symbol for the water department but also collects and holds rain and processes water for use within the facility.
