A Complementary Library Design in Parma, Ohio
GPD has provided architectural and engineering services for several branches of the Cuyahoga County Public Library since the 1990s. Recently, GPD helped redesign the county’s aging Parma branch location.
Located on a campus site adjacent to the City of Parma’s City Hall and Senior Center, this new 43,000-square-foot facility provides a contemporary feel that complements the surrounding buildings. Arranged under two intersecting, clerestory elements intended to bring plenty of natural light into the expansive footprint of the building, the new library features café space and circulation desk, inviting adult reading areas with two fireplaces, small private study rooms, computer classroom space and colorful teen and children’s reading areas complete with a homework study room and a story and craft room to engage both youngsters and parents. To serve the community, the design also includes a collection of various sized meeting rooms that can accommodate from 25 to 200 people in one space. Site work for the project includes new parking, drives, stormwater management structures and colorful garden landscaping.
